What Happens After the Silence Ends? Section 88 and the Rainbow Covenant Path

(These are my own personal thoughts and wonders. I am not an official representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. All opinions are meant to evoke wonder and pondering, not doctrine.)

Christ comes! And all the glorious promises and events that all the prophets have looked forward to will happen! We will take a look at DC 88 (my fave chapter) soon for more details. This picture below is a piece of wall art that I ordered on etsy at the first of the year 2022. It depicts Christ coming in the clouds. It was before I was aware of all the events and significance of the year 2022. Our bedroom wall was bare and I wanted a piece of art to remind me to always remember Jesus Christ when I wake up. So i ordered this piece and it took months to come. I finally looked up the reason for the delay and I saw that it was being shipped from Kyiv, Ukraine. I had ordered it before the war started and I had no idea this Etsy piece was coming from Ukraine. The day after I figured all this out it actually arrived with the mailing address from Kyiv and all. I was shocked it had made it considering all the news about the city being bombed like crazy. I also sensed a deeper significance to this symbol of hope making it to my door step against all odds. The hope of the Savior was springing forth miraculously from a newly war torn region.

These scary stories are far from home at this point but will they always be? I very recently attended the temple and was pondering/praying on this thought. That very night I had a dream where an old man with beautiful blue eyes told me, “You’re so bright and shiny today I’m going to tell you a little more.” (The thought of temple attendance brightening up my spirit made me laugh) For brevity and caution in sharing I’ll just say it was confirmed that challenges are sure to come. However, it ended with this promise: “Your attitude and stance towards your covenants will determine your level of protection.” This very much supported Pres Nelson’s latest plea to “Focus on the Temple.” This whole exchange reminded me of DC 88:

• 67 And if your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light, and there shall be no darkness in you; and that body which is filled with light comprehendeth all things.
• 68 Therefore, sanctify yourselves that your minds become single to God, and the days will come that you shall see him; for he will unveil his face unto you, and it shall be in his own time, and in his own way, and according to his own will.
• 69 Remember the great and last promise which I have made unto you; cast away your idle thoughts and your excess of laughter far from you.
• 70 Tarry ye, tarry ye in this place (temple), and call a solemn assembly, even of those who are the first laborers in this last kingdom.

Let’s look at DC 88 in regards to my last post: “And there shall be silence in heaven for the space of half an hour, and immediately after shall the curtain of heaven be unfolded, as a scroll is unfolded after it is rolled up, and the face of the Lord shall be unveiled; and the Saints that are upon the earth, who are alive, shall be quickened, and be caught up to meet him. And they who have slept in their graves shall come forth; for their graves shall be opened, and they also shall be caught up to meet him in the midst of the pillar of heaven: they are Christ’s, the first fruits: they who shall descend with him first, and they who are on the earth and in their graves, who are first caught up to meet him; and all this by the voice of the sounding of the trump of the angel of God.”

(Doctrine and Covenants 88:95-98) Section 88 was received by revelation on Dec. 27 and 28 1832….exactly 190 years ago from today! I did not realize this until just this moment. I took a break from writing and checked Christian Homestead channel to see low and behold he came out with a video today on DC 88. This blew me away because I did not know the significance of the date today regarding 88 until that moment. The timing here was not planned. I guess I’m on the right track. Its the perfect day to post about DC 88 and temple covenants.

In my last post I listed some clues as to how the silence is breaking and God is testifying in many ways about the imminent return of his Son. A part of this process will be the many aspects of the tribulation that are foretold in scripture such as wars, continual pouring out of plagues, disasters, and physical/political/social unrest. We can see these things picking up speed in the world around us. Doctrine and Covenants Section 87 was given on Christmas Day 1832 and it foretells of these calamities and wars. I personally suspect this Christmas of 2022 here in the West will be our last one while living in relatively peaceful times. WW3 is nipping at our heels. However, just as giving birth is a process that culminates into increasing crying out, pain, etc it is best handled by focusing on the final gift: the baby (or in this analogy the kingdom of God) The process is increasingly painful but completely worth it in the end! Whenever man has had to go through extreme difficulty it has always been hope that sees them through it successfully. When I gave birth to each of my five children I focused on the joy that would soon come from receiving them. So let’s start there! We have great things coming: miracles, greater blessings, the city of Enoch returning, the return of the lost 10 tribes, quickening, being caught up in the clouds, Adam-ondi-ahman, and seeing the face of Jesus Christ! Today I want to focus on the promise of the City of Enoch returning. This sounds like an unbelievable phenomenon that my mind can hardly grasp. This will be a shocking event, no doubt. Belief begins with hope so let’s start there.

One of the greatest boons for lifting hope is symbolism. The symbols of today enable the reality of tomorrow. When my body was wracked with birthing pains I could imagine the image of a baby. That one little picture conveyed more than I could ever express in words or writing: the feeling of love between mother and child, the warmth of a snuggle, the opportunity to experience and learn about the great love God has for us. If you are a mother you know the depth of what that image or symbol means. “As the old adage goes “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Visual symbolism can express more complex ideas than any given paragraph. One great symbol can replace an entire book or represent hours of conversation. Symbols connect deeply with our subconscious and can even bring to light memories once forgotten or veiled. For the audience who was present when the symbol emerged, the symbol will serve as a time machine in the future, transporting the person back to the time and place that the symbol was created. This will then bring back to mind the vast richness of meaning and definition that the symbol represent.

Symbols are powerful for lifting hope and essential for bringing people together against all odds to fight for a worthy cause. A well known example would be like in the Hunger Games, the three fingers and whistle represented solidarity in a dystopian world where rebels fought for freedom against an all-powerful tyrant.  Both sides of a battle know the power of a symbol as a rally cry. Right now in China the “White paper protests” are ongoing. The people hold up blank pieces of paper to symbolize the heavy censorship and lockdowns. And the authorities do everything they can to ban all white paper in public and destroy the use of such a symbol. The symbol must be oppressed or the meaning distorted. This must be why God and Satan both seek to dominate the symbols of the world and what they should mean to us when we see them.

We know that it is our temple covenants that help us tighten up our relationship with Jesus Christ. This relationship (much like a marriage) will ultimately protect us through the perils of the last days and help us to see the face of Christ while on the Earth. Our learning in the temple is full of symbolism. I find that these symbols help me reach beyond the mortal veil and “remember” things that are not readily retrieved otherwise. My favorite covenant symbol of all time is the first one given in all of holy writ: The RAINBOW.

Let’s take a look at Enoch and the sign of the rainbow as it is explained in the Joseph Smith Translation of the bible. It’s not just about the flood but was originally given to covenant that the city of Enoch will return in the latter days.  

Breaking Down the Rainbow

Rainbows are created from water+light. The two necessary ingredients for the rainbow are rain+the sun.

What do scriptures and covenants teach us about water and light? Well, in order to enter the presence of the Lord we must be clean every whit. This requires a washing by water, followed by a cleansing of fire. Covenants being sealed require water + light.

All who seek eternal life must follow the example of the Savior by being baptized and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. The prophet Nephi said that the Savior showed us the gate by which [we] should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of [our] sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost. And then are [we] in this strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life. ”We will receive eternal life if we endure to the end, staying on the covenant path. ” (2 Nephi 31:17–18). So we have water of baptism plus the fire and light of the Holy spirit. This is a concept held within my maiden name: Washburn. Wash+burn. My family heritage hails from the descendants of the Knight family (the family of firsts: to view the Book of Mormon, first miracle of the restoration, first tongues of fire gift, to be married by Joseph Smith, help build the Kirtland Temple, and lay the cornerstone of the Nauvoo Temple.) who’s large extended family made up 2/3 the population of the earliest church body. My maiden name helps me remember the covenants made and kept so faithfully by my ancestors.

Water + light = a rainbow! 
To me the rainbow is the ultimate covenant symbol. The first mention of covenants in all of scripture is in Genesis.

JST Genesis 9:22.  It’s an amazing find! Most people know the rainbow is a sign given to Noah that God won’t flood the earth again but it was originally given as a sign to Enoch and his people who were praying desperately that a day of righteousness might be brought about during their day; (And President Nelson just called on US to be this righteous people!)

The people of Enoch sought for it with all their hearts; to establish millennial righteousness and peace throughout the Earth.  In response to their righteous prayers, the Lord covenanted with Enoch and his people that they would see just such a day, and that He would answer their prayers, but not in that era. Accordingly, God took Enoch and his city off of the face of the earth to reserve them to come back in the day when their prayers could be answered. They would return in the latter days and complete their mission when as a result of their renewed ministry upon the mortal world, righteousness would sweep the earth prior to the Second Coming of Christ.

Now compare with the Pres Nelson’s words Oct 2022 General Conference “Overcome the World and Find Rest: “One crucial element of this gathering is preparing a people who are able, ready, and worthy to receive the Lord when He comes again, a people who have already chosen Jesus Christ over this fallen world, a people who rejoice in their agency to live the higher, holier laws of Jesus Christ.

         I call upon you, my dear brothers and sisters, to become this righteous people. God sets the rainbow in heaven as a reminder of His covenant to Enoch first and then later adds the flood addendum with Noah.

JST Genesis 9:

21 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant, which I made unto thy father Enoch; that, when men should keep all my commandments, Zion should again come on the earth, the city of Enoch which I have caught up unto myself.
22 And this is mine everlasting covenant, that when thy posterity shall embrace the truth, and look upward, then shall Zion look downward, and all the heavens shall shake with gladness, and the earth shall tremble with joy;
23 And the general assembly of the church of the firstborn shall come down out of heaven, and possess the earth, and shall have place until the end come. And this is mine everlasting covenant, which I made with thy father Enoch.
24 And the bow shall be in the cloud, and I will establish my covenant unto thee, which I have made between me and thee, for every living creature of all flesh that shall be upon the earth.
25 And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant which I have established between me and thee; for all flesh that shall be upon the earth.

The Rainbow is a Circle:
an Eternal Round of Ascension and Descension

All rainbows are actually full circles, but because of our vantage point on the ground most people only ever see an arc or semicircle.
If you are in an airplane above the ground you can sometimes see the full circular rainbow.

Doctrine and Covenants 3 informs us: “God doth not walk in crooked paths…
therefore his paths are straight, and his course is one eternal round.”

So when i think of entering the straight and narrow path at baptism this is what i envision: (Its a powerful symbol) The eternal round of the rainbow covenant path is where water and fire combine. As we ascend and descent, traversing the mortal path, we try to keep the commandments. We fall down, then rise up again through the repentance and grace of Jesus Christ over and over again. We continue on until we finally have the eyes to see what John the Revelator saw:

Revelation 4:
John sees the celestial earth, the throne of God, and all created things worshipping the Lord. ” I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne and there was a rainbow round about the throne.”

So we circle again and again until we finally reach Christ’s presence in exaltation at the center.  President Nelson Oct 2022: “We cultivate faith in Jesus Christ by repenting daily and keeping covenants that endow us with power. We stay on the covenant path and are blessed with spiritual strength, personal revelation, increasing faith, and the ministering of angels. Living the doctrine of Christ can produce the most powerful virtuous cycle,(rainbow circle) creating spiritual momentum in our lives.”

To me the rainbow is not just a phenomenon of nature, but an eternal monument to a divine covenant.

Most of us have lived all of our gospel lives without realizing what the covenant associated with the rainbow FULLY means. Most know it has something to do with not flooding the earth ever again. In reality it is much more glorious.

“When Enoch’s people obtained the presence of God, and their gifts of translation, they attempted but were not able to spread the gospel across the world and usher in an era of millennial righteousness. The world’s rejection of their witness and testimony actually brought about the flood of Noah. They mourned and prayed mightily with a combined voice that they might be privileged to see a day when righteousness would flood the earth, and evil would not be found upon her face. “Elder Orson Pratt spoke of Enoch and the covenant of the Father with Enoch in a conference address given in the Old Salt Lake City Tabernacle July 19, 1874.

“Enoch and his people prayed that a day of righteousness might be brought about during their day; they sought for it with all their hearts; they looked abroad over the face of the earth and saw the corruptions that had been introduced by the various nations, the descendants of Adam, and their hearts melted within them, and they groaned before the Lord with pain and sorrow, because of the wickedness of the children of men, and they sought for a day of rest, they sought that righteousness might be revealed, that wickedness might be swept away and that the earth might rest for a season.”  (JD, 17: 148)

“God gave them visions, portrayed to them the future of the world, showed unto them that this earth must fulfill the measure of its creation; that generation after generation must be born and pass away, and that, after a certain period of time, the earth would rest from wickedness, that the wicked would be swept away, and the earth would be cleansed and sanctified and be prepared for a righteous people. “Until that day,” saith the Lord, “you and your people shall rest, Zion shall be taken up into my own bosom.” Ancient Zion should be held in reserve until the day of rest should come, “then,” said the Lord to Enoch, “thou and all thy city shall descend upon the earth, and your prayers shall be answered.” (JD, 17: 148)

This covenant with Enoch was so momentous that God placed the rainbow in the sky to remind all future generations of this grand covenant, to keep it before the minds of mankind until it was fulfilled.

“21 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant, which I made unto thy father Enoch; that, when men should keep all my commandments, Zion should again come on the earth, the city of Enoch which I have caught up unto myself.

The rainbow we see in our skies represents God’s promise to Enoch that when men upon the earth “should keep all my commandments” and are righteous at last, that He will fulfill their righteous prayers, and bring Zion back onto the earth in an era where their missionary labors will bring that righteousness which will cover the earth in the millennial day. And, by extension, when Zion is upon the earth, Christ will come and begin His millennial reign.

In words that shake the earth, the God of heaven proclaims that when we, Enoch’s counterparts of the latter-days, embrace the truth and understand our relationship to Enoch’s Zion, and employ our hearts and faith and hands in building up Zion upon the earth, that Enoch and his people will look downward and all the heavens “shall shake with gladness, and the earth shall tremble with joy”. Then, Enoch will descend out of heaven and rush to embrace his great and righteous posterity, and they will fall upon our necks and kiss us. (Moses 7:63) Then together with us, Enoch and his Zion will possess the earth and have a place upon it until the earth becomes the future Celestial Kingdom. And, this is the covenant of the rainbow, which God made with Enoch—and since it has been renewed in our day—with us. (John Pontius)

So what actions can we take to hasten these magnificent events? Why have they not happened yet? As a church and people what do we yet lack? Well DC 88 and 84 (Pres Nelson urged all the women to study sec 84 a few years ago) teaches the connection between our covenants and sharing the gospel and our testimonies with the world. DC 84:

48 And the Father teacheth him of the covenant which he has renewed and confirmed upon you, which is confirmed upon you for your sakes, and not for your sakes only, but for the sake of the whole world.

• 54 And your minds in times past have been darkened because of unbelief, and because you have treated lightly the things you have received—
• 55 Which vanity and unbelief have brought the whole church under condemnation.
• 56 And this condemnation resteth upon the children of Zion, even all.
• 57 And they shall remain under this condemnation until they repent and remember the new covenant, even the Book of Mormon and the former commandments which I have given them, not only to say, but to do according to that which I have written—
• 58 That they may bring forth fruit meet for their Father’s kingdom; otherwise there remaineth a scourge and judgment to be poured out upon the children of Zion.
• 61 For I will forgive you of your sins with this commandment—that you remain steadfast in your minds in solemnity and the spirit of prayer, in bearing testimony to all the world of those things which are communicated unto you.
• 62 Therefore, go ye into all the world; and unto whatsoever place ye cannot go ye shall send, that the testimony may go from you into all the world unto every creature.

Perhaps, this is why we have been commissioned at this last general conference to flood the earth with the Book of Mormon? Perhaps, this is why there has been a push to share the Book or Mormon digitally and through social media? The internet is pretty amazing for sharing information “into all the world unto every creature.” Imagine if we all created websites, fb pages, and shared the BOM with all of our friends digitally? Many, many years ago the Earth was flooded with water( in the likeness of baptism by water). We know that the latter days is the time for the Earth to burn with fire (in the likeness of baptism by fire) and that the Earth will be flooded with righteousness by the fiery spirit.

The Special Role that Women Play in this Process.

“Let other women pursue heedlessly what they perceive as their selfish interests. You can be a much needed force for love and truth and righteousness on this planet.”(Pres Kimball, GC 1979)

“The women of this dispensation are distinct from the women of any other because this dispensation is distinct from any other.⁴ This distinction brings both privileges and responsibilities. “Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world … will be drawn to the Church in large numbers. This will happen to the degree that the women of the Church reflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives and to the degree that the women of the Church are seen as distinct and different—in happy ways—from the women of the world.” (Pres Nelson emphasizing Pres Kimball prophecy1979, https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2015/10/a-plea-to-my-sisters?lang=eng)

In Oct of 2019 Pres Nelson instructed us at the Women’s Session of General Conference:

President Nelson said that everything that happened in Harmony has profound implications for the women of the Church. “The restoration of the priesthood, along with the Lord’s counsel to Emma, can guide and bless each of you,” he said. “How I yearn for you to understand that the restoration of the priesthood is just as relevant to you as a woman as it is to any man.” Latter-day Saint women have the right to draw liberally upon the Savior’s power to help their family and others they love, President Nelson said. It’s a process, however, that is not spelled out in any manual. “The Holy Ghost will be your personal tutor as you seek to understand what the Lord would have you know and do,” he said. “This process is neither quick nor easy, but it is spiritually invigorating. “What could possibly be more exciting than to labor with the Spirit to understand priesthood power—God’s power?”

Accessing the power of God requires the same things that the Lord instructed Emma, and all other Latter-day Saint women, to do, he said.

He then suggested the study of DC Section 25.

And this part of sec 25 jumped out at me recently as I’ve been pondering on writing and sharing online:

• 7 And thou shalt be ordained under his hand to expound scriptures, and to exhort the church, according as it shall be given thee by my Spirit.
• 8 For he shall lay his hands upon thee, and thou shalt receive the Holy Ghost, and thy time shall be given to writing, and to learning much.
• 10 And verily I say unto thee that thou shalt lay aside the things of this world, and seek for the things of a better.

So how can we all be a part of this flooding of the Earth? Women and men alike? I am just a drop of water in an ocean but it takes every drop of water to actually flood the Earth with the tool that will bring the covenants, spirit and baptism of fire unto every creature. We don’t all need thousands of viewers just as people don’t need to immediately get baptized when we share the BOM. I’ve found the miracles and spirit flow when we just do it!

Elder Rasband pleaded with us in “This Day” General Conference Oct 2022: “Our living prophet is doing his part to flood the earth with the Book of Mormon. But he cannot open the floodgates alone. We must follow his lead.” ” When you hand them a Book of Mormon, you are opening their minds and hearts to the word of God. You do not need to carry printed copies of the book with you. You can easily share it from your mobile phone from the scriptures section of the Gospel Library app. (Or copy and paste this link: https://bofm.page.link/app in a text,email, or instant message)

Think of all those who could be blessed by the gospel in their lives, and then send to them a copy of the Book of Mormon from your phone. Remember to include your testimony and how this book has blessed your life.

My dear friends, as an Apostle of the Lord, I invite you to follow our beloved prophet, President Nelson, in flooding the earth with the Book of Mormon. The need is so great; we need to act now. I promise that you will be participating in “the greatest work on earth,” the gathering of Israel, as you are inspired to reach out to those who have been “kept from the truth because they know not where to find it.” They need your testimony and witness of how this book has changed your life and drawn you closer to God, His peace, and His “tidings of great joy.”

Grace and Spirit Flow As We Share With Others

I find that the words of DC 88:81 come in to my mind often. It usually comes as not my own thoughts but a mild rebuke or exhortation of encouragement to which i often resist. I’m a pretty private person so sharing the ideas, revelations, warnings, gospel insights that come to me is the last thing I want to do. I would really prefer to just keep it in my own heart. And I never connected until this moment the symbolism of the numbers for me personally. This scripture is DC 88:81. The number 8 as a symbol holds special meaning in general AND on a private level, but the number 888 has personal meaning that has to do with many life experiences. I include the number 888 on a lot of my email addresses, etc. Never before have i noticed that this verse I hear whispered to my mind often is the actual number that appears before my eyes just as often. I feel silly not having noticed this until now. You’d think with DC 88 as my fave section and my love of the number symbol of 8, particulary 888, I would have looked it up. Interesting how these insights pop us as I write…I hear you Lord. We think we see and hear. And then the Lord shows us something new. Over and over again! I once was blind and now I see! It can happen every day with the spirit as our guide!

Doctrine and Covenants 88:

• 78 Teach ye diligently and my grace shall attend you, that you may be instructed more perfectly in theory, in principle, in doctrine, in the law of the gospel, in all things that pertain unto the kingdom of God, that are expedient for you to understand;
• 79 Of things both in heaven and in the earth, and under the earth; things which have been, things which are, things which must shortly come to pass; things which are at home, things which are abroad; the wars and the perplexities of the nations, and the judgments which are on the land; and a knowledge also of countries and of kingdoms—
• 80 That ye may be prepared in all things when I shall send you again to magnify the calling whereunto I have called you, and the mission with which I have commissioned you.
• 81 Behold, I sent you out to testify and warn the people, and it becometh every man who hath been warned to warn his neighbor.

The Perfect Ending

As I drove home tonight (on the anniversary of DC:88) from a beautiful wedding reception of a brand new temple marriage, my heart was so full of happiness for them. There is nothing better than witnessing a friend, family babysitter, and Young Woman ( who I used to teach and plan activities for years ago as her church leader) begin a brand new temple marriage. And as i was reveling in these thought while driving home…right in that moment the song “Holy Spirit Come” came on with these perfect words: “O Holy Spirit Come. Like a Flood. Like a fire. Holy Spirit. We’re on the edge of a new beginning. God we know you have so much more. We’re praying for your rain to pour. I’m coming with a heart of worship. I’m bringing in a brand new song. I’m ready to see the unthinkable. I’m ready for a miracle. An overflowing of your kingdom. Oh can you hear it? Our God is speaking. Oh can you see it? O holy spirit come.” My heart was overflowing with fiery happiness and the rain definitely came pouring from my eyes in that moment.
